Transferring a domain means moving its registration from one registrar to another. You can register and transfer domains directly through GoZen Host. This doesn’t affect your website or email unless you also change DNS settings during the process.

Before You Transfer

Make sure your domain meets these requirements:

  • The domain is older than 60 days (ICANN policy prevents transfers within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer)
  • The domain is not expired (some registrars allow transfer of recently expired domains, but it’s risky)
  • The domain is unlocked (remove “registrar lock” / “transfer lock” at your current registrar)
  • You have access to the domain’s administrative email (transfer confirmations are sent here)
  • WHOIS privacy is temporarily disabled (some registrars require this during transfer)

Step-by-Step: Transfer Your Domain

Step 1: Get the Authorization Code

At your current registrar, request an EPP code (also called an authorization code, auth code, or transfer key):

RegistrarWhere to Find It
GoDaddyDomain Settings > Transfer > Get Authorization Code
NamecheapDomain List > Manage > Sharing & Transfer > Auth Code
Google DomainsRegistration Settings > Transfer Out
CloudflareOverview > Transfer > Get Auth Code
OVHDomain > General > Transfer > Auth Code

The code is usually sent to your email. It looks something like: j8!kL3#mN9pQ2$rT

Step 2: Unlock the Domain

At your current registrar:

  1. Find the Domain Lock or Transfer Lock setting
  2. Disable it (set to “Unlocked”)

Some registrars automatically unlock when you request an auth code. Others require you to do it separately.

Step 3: Initiate the Transfer

At the new registrar (where you want to move the domain):

  1. Search for your domain in the Transfer section
  2. Enter the authorization code (EPP code)
  3. Complete the purchase (transfers usually include a one-year registration renewal)
  4. Confirm the transfer via email

Step 4: Approve the Transfer

You’ll receive confirmation emails:

  • From the new registrar: Confirming you initiated the transfer
  • From the old registrar: Asking if you approve the transfer

Approve both. Some registrars auto-approve after 5 days if you don’t respond.

Step 5: Wait for Completion

Transfers typically take 5-7 days. Some complete faster (within hours) if both registrars process it quickly.

What Happens During a Transfer

  • Your website stays online. The transfer only moves the domain registration, not your hosting or DNS records.
  • DNS records are preserved in most cases. The new registrar usually imports your existing records.
  • Email continues working as long as DNS doesn’t change.
  • Your domain is extended by 1 year (transfers include a renewal).

Transferring DNS Without Transferring the Domain

You don’t have to transfer your domain registration to point it to GoZen Host. You can keep your domain at its current registrar and just update the nameservers:

  ns1.gozenhost.com
ns2.gozenhost.com
ns3.gozenhost.com
zen.gozenhost.com

This is faster (takes minutes, not days) and doesn’t require auth codes or approval periods.

See Pointing Your Domain to GoZen Host for details.

Common Issues

IssueFix
“Domain is locked”Disable transfer lock at your current registrar
“Auth code invalid”Request a new code. Some expire after a few days.
“Domain registered less than 60 days ago”Wait until the 60-day lock period passes
Transfer stuck for 5+ daysCheck your email for approval requests. Also check spam.
Lost the admin emailContact your current registrar to update the admin contact email first
WHOIS privacy blocking transferTemporarily disable WHOIS privacy before transferring
Domain expired during transferRenew at the current registrar first, then initiate transfer

Transfer Pricing

Domain transfers typically cost the same as a one-year renewal (the transfer includes a 1-year extension). There’s no extra “transfer fee” at most registrars.
